KATHMANDU: The United States has claimed to have destroyed three Iranian oil tankers in a military strike. The U.S. Central Command has released a video of the sinking of M\/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman in an attack on Saturday, warning Iran of “severe economic consequences” if it attacks U.S. naval vessels. <\/p>\n
According to the US Central Command, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated after firing a ballistic missile at two US Navy warships on patrol. It is claimed that the US aircraft carrier and the destroyer carrying the guided missiles were able to dodge the attack and no US soldiers were injured. <\/p>\n
The U.S. military said the M\/T Downey was permanently inactivated near Kharg Island, the M\/T Stark-1 was permanently inactivated near Jask, and the M\/T Cylo was sunk in the Gulf of Oman. The crew was instructed to abandon the ship before the attack, the Central Command said. <\/p>\n
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned that if Iran targets the U.S. Navy, its oil tankers will be destroyed. “If Iran shoots at American ships, we will sink their oil tankers. They don’t attack the U.S. Navy to prevent that from happening,” he wrote on X. <\/p>\n
Central Command Commander Brad Cooper said the three tankers were part of a multi-billion dollar “shadow network” to finance the IRGC and regional groups. <\/p>\n
Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the attack, calling it a violation of Article 2 (4) of the UN Charter, a war crime and a threat to international peace, maritime trade and security. <\/p>\n
The ministry has also accused it of the continuation of the ongoing US military aggression, naval blockade and economic war against Iran.
