The construction of the Matatirtha-Chobhar 132 KV transmission line has been completed to make the electricity supply system of Kathmandu Valley more reliable. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is preparing to bring the 6-kilometer-long transmission line into operation from Friday.

The section constructed under the Thankot-Chapagaun-Bhaktapur 132 kV transmission line project will provide additional alternative routes for the supply of electricity to the Kathmandu Valley. The NEA expects that this will help in increasing demand management, voltage improvement and increase the reliability of the supply system.

Managing Director of NEA Dirgha Kumar Shrestha said that it will be easier to maintain balance in demand and supply of electricity in and surrounding areas after the operation of Matatirtha-Chobhar transmission line and Chobhar substation.

In order to manage the electricity demand of the valley in the coming winter, the NEA had decided to charge the Matatirtha-Chobhar transmission line within 15 days on September 22. Two ways have been constructed at the Chobhar substation for the operation of the line.

The Chobhar substation has nine feeders of 11 kV capacity for local distribution. After the operation of the substation, electricity will be supplied to Kirtipur, Pharping, Pulchowk and Ekantakuna, among other areas. This is expected to improve the voltage in these areas and make the supply more quality and reliable. The electricity generated mainly from the hydropower projects in the Trishuli and Marsyangdi river catchment areas is being supplied to the Kathmandu Valley through the Matatirtha substation. After the operation of the transmission line from Matatirtha to Chobhar, additional options will be available in the electricity flow in the valley.

Meanwhile, a 4.5 km 132 KV underground transmission line is being constructed from Chovar to Patan Substation in Lagankhel, Lalitpur, via Ring Road. For this, the work of upgrading Patan Substation to 132 KV level has also been started.

The Thankot-Chapagaun-Bhaktapur project was started in the fiscal year 2055÷56 with the aim of constructing the ring structure of the 132 KV transmission line covering Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. The construction of the transmission line towards Kathmandu and Bhaktapur has been completed under the project carried out with the investment of the Government of Nepal and NEA.

However, the construction of the transmission line has not moved forward after the locals of Khokana, Bungmati, Harisiddhi and Lamatar areas of Lalitpur obstructed the construction of the transmission line. This has delayed the plan to operate the 132 KV transmission system in the full ring structure.

Although the operation of the transmission line up to Chovar is crucial for strengthening electricity supply in the Kathmandu Valley, there are still challenges to complete the obstructed section towards Lalitpur for the construction of full ring infrastructure.

Kathmandu.
