KATHMANDU: Minister for Education and Sports and Pro-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, Sasmit Pokharel, has stressed on the need of a definite academic calendar, good governance and maximum use of technology for the educational improvement of the university. <\/p>\n
At a meeting of the 67th anniversary of the Tribhuvan University Assembly held at Tribhuvan Memorial Building in Kirtipur today, he said the University should be made timely, research-based and competitive in the international level. <\/p>\n
Minister Pokharel also directed the officials to conduct all processes from entrance examination, admission, teaching and learning to examination and result publication as per the timetable. <\/p>\n
He said that if the calendar is affected, it should be made clear and the time limit for improvement should be made public. In this context, he said, “I direct the concerned officials to make a concrete action plan to provide services to the students by making the exact timetable of entrance examination, student admission, teaching and learning period, effective internal evaluation, publication of final examination results, mark sheets, transcript and certificate distribution and the maximum use of technology.” If the calendar is affected due to any reason, I request all concerned to make public the reasons for it and the timeline for improvement. \u201d<\/p>\n
Minister Pokharel stressed that the examination system should be changed to measure how much a student has learned rather than how much he has written. Pointing out that practical and creative manpower should be produced instead of rote knowledge, he added, “Let’s not only measure how much a student has written in the examination, but also how much he has learned.” I would also like to request the concerned professors to be involved in teaching and research work so that they can develop problem-solving ability, creativity, research capacity and practical skills, not rote knowledge. \u201d<\/p>\n
He also stressed that the university should give priority to research to find solutions to various problems of the country. Speaking about research and innovation, he said, “Universities should give more priority to research that seeks solutions to the social, economic, cultural, environmental and technological problems of Nepal. The research of the university can contribute more effectively to the national development only if the gap between knowledge production and its use can be reduced.” \u201d<\/p>\n
Stating that students should be the center of all the reforms of the university, Minister Pokharel said that technology including artificial intelligence should be taken as an opportunity. On the use of student-centered reforms and technology, he clarified, “Students should be at the center of all the reforms of the university. There is a need to develop an effective mechanism to listen to and resolve the complaints, needs and aspirations of the students. It is necessary to develop policies and capacities for responsible and ethical use of new technology, including artificial intelligence, not only as a challenge but also as a new opportunity for knowledge and innovation. \u201d<\/p>\n
