Kathmandu. The government is administering Vitamin ‘A’ to children across the country today and Monday. The Ministry of Health and Population has started administering de-worming tablets along with Vitamin ‘A’ for two days under the National Vitamin ‘A’ programme, said Leela Bikram Thapa, chief of the Nutrition Section of the Department of Health Services. <\/p>\n
He said that Vitamin ‘A’ capsules would be administered to around 22 lakh children between the age of six months to 59 months under the programme. Similarly, about 2 million children between one year to five years of age are being administered the de-worming drug ‘Albendazole’. For this, the local levels have set up vaccination centers at convenient places. About 52,000 female health volunteers and 15,000 health workers have been mobilized for the programme. <\/p>\n
Vitamin ‘A’ plays an important role in the development of eyesight, immunity and growth and development of children, and the de-worming medicine removes stomach worms and protects children from malnutrition, anaemia, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. <\/p>\n
The programme for the prevention and treatment of Vitamin ‘A’ deficiency was implemented across the country in 2050 BS from eight districts. Likewise, the deworming programme started in 13 districts in 2056 BS for the control and prevention of deworming was implemented in all districts in 2067 BS. <\/p>\n
