He visited Barpak for the first time in 2070 BS. It was a delight to see the original houses that were covered with monotonous stones at that time. Barpak, which is the largest and most densely populated area in Gorkha district, now feels that it has lost its originality. Easy access to road network, well-equipped hotels for domestic and foreign tourists who come on a daily basis, food imported from outside seems to be preferred over local production.

Narrow roads, tractors made of cement and sand, some straightening rods on local roads, some eating the foundation of houses and some doing the final phase of house construction can be seen in every locality of Barpak. In Barpak, the center of the Gorkha earthquake of 2072, concrete houses are now getting more priority than the original houses. Although only a few original and traditional houses remain, the number of concrete houses made of sand, cement, bricks and rods has increased.

According to Mohanbhagi Gurung, a local, many houses made of cement have been built after the 2072 BS earthquake. He said that one of the reasons why this house is a little safer than the old house and the other reason is that most of the people of the village are abroad, some of them have become financially capable in some ways, so such a house (concrete) has been built in the village. “Now the economically well-to-do people in the village have built such pucca houses, while others are renovating their old houses,” he said.

Dipesh Darshandhari, who came from Kathmandu, said, “Barpak, which is more peaceful than Kathmandu, has lost its originality. Darshadhari said that the Barpak residents, who are known to the world as the epicenter of the martyrdom of the Lahores and the recent earthquake, should emphasize on originality and local products. Although maize, barley, wheat, millet, silam and other vegetables are produced locally, vegetables and other food items are imported from the district headquarters Gorkha Bazaar and Chitwan due to easy access to transportation. The Barpak locals need to emphasize on tourism promotion by giving priority to historical aspects, originality and local products.

Kathmandu.
