Kathmandu. Locals and traders have taken to the streets to protest against the government’s decision to scrap the Small Customs Office at Bariyarpatti in Siraha. Vehicular movement has been affected since this morning as the Postal Highway has been obstructed due to the agitation. <\/p>\n
The Government of Nepal had decided to close down the Bariyarpatti Small Customs Office by publishing a notice in the gazette on May 4, 2003. Locals have protested saying that the decision will have a negative impact on the trade and local economy along the border. <\/p>\n
The agitators have blocked the Postal Highway at Bariyarpatti Chowk of Bariyarpatti Rural Municipality-3 since 8.30 am by placing benches in the middle of the road. <\/p>\n
The east-west side vehicles have been stranded for a long time due to the road obstruction. <\/p>\n
The protesters have demanded the reopening of the Bariyarpatti Small Customs Office and demanded that the government immediately withdraw its decision. <\/p>\n
According to local traders, the closure of the customs office will have a direct impact on trade, revenue collection and daily economic activities. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Bahadur Pal, spokesperson of the District Police Office, Siraha, said that discussions and coordination are underway with the agitators. Efforts are underway to resume the obstructed road, he added. Superintendent of Police (SP) Basudev Pathak, chief of the District Police Office, Siraha, has also reached the incident site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
