Kathmandu. The Election Commission (EC) has proposed to the political parties to hold the local and provincial elections scheduled for 2084 BS on the same date. <\/p>\n
According to the EC, the state’s expenditure will be saved over Rs 4 billion by holding the local level elections together as the term of the local level and the provincial assemblies expire on May 16, 2084 BS. <\/p>\n
The EC has held a special discussion with the political parties on Tuesday with the objective of making the election frugal, technology-friendly and systematic. <\/p>\n
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has briefed about various aspects of electoral reforms. <\/p>\n
During the meeting, discussions were also held on the issue of holding elections to 74 posts of local levels and provincial assemblies lying vacant after the people’s representatives resigned from the last election. <\/p>\n
Likewise, the EC has already recommended the government to hold election to the post lying vacant due to the death of a member representing the far-western state in the National Assembly. In order to make the elections modern and technology-friendly, preparations are underway to send the draft of the ‘Election Management Act’ to the Parliament through the Ministry of Home Affairs. <\/p>\n
Acting Chief Commissioner Bhandari has urged the political parties to pass the Election Management Bill from the upcoming budget session and bring it as an Act. He said, “The Act should have been brought in a way to hold the local and provincial assembly elections on the same date. It will not be possible if there is no technology-enabled law to conduct elections right now. \u2019<\/p>\n
He stressed that the political parties should play a positive role in the parliament as the old style of election could not be changed in the absence of the Act. <\/p>\n
The EC argues that the new act is imperative to bring in modern technology and make the election free, fair and fearless. Based on the suggestions received from the political parties, the EC has expressed commitment to finalize the draft and send it to the legislature through the Home Ministry soon.
