Work has been started to develop Tundikhel as a greenery and well-managed public space. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has forwarded grassland construction and greenery promotion programme in around 61,263 square metres area towards the south of Army Pavilion.

According to KMC, ‘Bermuda grass’ grass will be planted in the area by keeping three inches of fertile soil in the area. The estimated cost of the project is estimated at Rs 42.5 crore and Rs 2.7 crore has been contracted. The project is targeted to be completed by mid-January 2083.

Under the greenery programme, a water recharge pit will be constructed in four corners of Tundikhel for water management and rainwater recharge. The metropolis has made it clear that it would not construct any permanent structure in the Tundikhel area and said it would be made open and managed for public use.

According to KMC, the programme has been launched with the objective of providing easy environment for rest, exercise, sports and public programs by minimizing the problem of dust and mud. Although some activities may be temporarily affected during the construction period, the open platform can be used as an alternative.

Kathmandu.
