Kathmandu. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has said the production, distribution, storage, transportation and consumption of narcotic drugs was increasing in Nepal and it should be taken as a national challenge. <\/p>\n
Addressing a programme organized to mark the International Day against Narcotic Drugs and Illicit Trafficking at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday, Minister Pokharel said that the drug control was not only the issue of implementation of laws but also a serious challenge directly related to public health. <\/p>\n
“The data has also made it clear that the production, sale, distribution, storage, transportation and consumption of narcotic drugs has increased in Nepal,” he said. There is a need for us to be sensitive to its prevention, mitigation and control. This is not only a matter of law enforcement, it is also a matter of public health. It has to be seen as a national challenge as it affects the health, safety and prospects of the youth. \u2019<\/p>\n
According to IGP Karki, the statistics of the past five years show that on an average four thousand drugs cases are registered and around eight thousand accused arrested every year. <\/p>\n
In the current fiscal year 2082\u00f783, 5,047 cases related to drugs have been registered so far, he said. A total of 8,068 people including 7,725 Nepali, 328 Indian and 15 foreign nationals were arrested on drug charges. <\/p>\n

Police confiscated 45,850 kilogrammes of marijuana, 477 kilogrammes hashish, 43 kilogrammes heroin, 5 kilogrammes 768 kilogrammes of cocaine and 125 kilogrammes and 66 kilogrammes of opium, said Karki. <\/p>\n
