Kathmandu. \u00a0Nepal’s first modern transport tunnel way, Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola, is to be formally inaugurated from tomorrow. <\/p>\n
Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal and JICA Chairman are jointly inaugurating the project. According to the Department of Roads, only ambulances, fire engines and emergency vehicles of security agencies will be allowed to enter the tunnel for immediate time after the inauguration. <\/p>\n
The construction of Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel way was completed with a concessional loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and joint investment of the government of Nepal. The length of the tunnel is 2.68 kilometers. However, if the evacuation tunnel and cross-passages are counted, the total length of the tunnel is about 5.5 kilometers. <\/p>\n
The Japanese construction company ‘Hajma Ando Corporation’ had started the construction of the project in 2076 BS. According to the Department of Roads, a mock drill would be conducted within a week of the inauguration of the tunnel as a preparatory exercise for possible disasters like fire or accident. The one-lane operation will be conducted on trial basis for about a week after the exercise becomes successful. <\/p>\n
The Department plans to bring the tunnel way into full operation only after these processes. Motorbikes and vehicles carrying inflammable explosives are prohibited from plying in the tunnel.
