Kathmandu. CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has claimed that the emergence of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) was based on populism, opportunism and anarchy. <\/p>\n
Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on Friday, General Secretary Pokharel said that the sooner the RSP has emerged as a national power, the more likely it will fall. Stating that the RSP was not a long-term challenge for Nepal’s politics, he said it could be easily tackled. <\/p>\n
He stressed that the UML should prepare itself ideologically and organizationally to face forces like RSP. He pointed out the need to win back the trust of the new generation, the grassroots and the middle class who have drifted away from the party. <\/p>\n
“The faster a force rises, the more likely it is to fall,” Pokharel said, “Therefore, it is important to understand the reality that the faster it rises, the faster the risk of its downfall.” According to him, the RSP is not a force that will be a long-term challenge in Nepal’s politics. “It can be dealt with, but we have to prepare ourselves for that first,” he added. We should work to reconnect the new generation that has been ideologically alienated from us, to bring the basic classes and communities that have been alienated from us to the party, and to win back the trust of the middle class that has drifted away from us. \u2019<\/p>\n
He was of the view that the policies should be updated to connect different languages, cultures and communities in the society with the party, and the party should be restructured by reforming the organizational structure. He also made it clear that the party was now moving in that direction. <\/p>\n
General Secretary Pokharel added that the campaign for reforms and restructuring would be forwarded through the institutional process to make the party stronger and united. He made it clear that the party was trying to move ahead without any kind of crisis or problem in the party. Admitting that there was a sense of despair and escapism in the party hierarchy after the election results, he said it was imperative to infuse new enthusiasm among the party cadres. He argued that the relations with the people could not be lively without generating enthusiasm among the cadres. <\/p>\n
“We will do all these things through an institutional process. We will move ahead with the objective of uniting the party,” Pokharel said. He stressed the need of reform and restructuring to make the party stronger, capable and united. “Our main challenge now is to re-energise the cadres,” he said, adding, “It is not possible to win the trust of the people by carrying questions, confusion and grievances in our hearts.” Therefore, we should first remove our dilemmas and go to the people with confidence. He urged the party cadres to find answers to the questions and grievances in their minds. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, General Secretary Pokharel has challenged the government to prove the allegations of corruption levelled against his party and leadership. He claimed that attempts were being made to defame the UML on the basis of political vendetta. He said that UML has been implicated in Yeti Holdings, Omni and Giribandhu T-State scams without any reason. Pokharel questioned how corruption can take place when there is no financial transaction. According to him, the party has been defamed on the issue of only policy level decision on some issues while the policy-making process has not even started in some cases. He said that the government should prove these allegations when the UML is not in the government. <\/p>\n
Recalling the past incidents, Pokharel said that the leaders were being harassed on the basis of political vendetta. He claimed that he could not gather any evidence and file a case against him even after keeping the party chairman in custody for 13 days and vice-chair Bishnu Poudel for 25 days. <\/p>\n
“We are not trying to defame ourselves because of our mistakes, but because of political allegations. Many allegations have been levelled but they have not been proved,” he said, adding, “Now that the government belongs to them, if there is evidence, they should be able to take legal action.” Where there is no financial transaction, the charge of corruption does not stand. \u2019<\/p>\n
Claiming that the UML has the most honest leaders and cadres among the political parties in Nepal, Pokharel said his party was ready to face any situation on the issue of good governance.
