<\/p>\nKathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over the arrest of senior journalist Kishor Shrestha. <\/p>\n
Issuing a press release on Thursday, the FNJ said its serious attention has been drawn to the arrest of Shrestha over the news report. <\/p>\n
Shrestha, the editor-in-chief of Jana Aastha Weekly and former acting chairman of Press Council Nepal, was arrested by a team from his residence in Lalitpur at 9.00 pm on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
Following the arrest, police had carried out searches at Shrestha’s house at around 1 am and his office on Wednesday morning to find a source of information. <\/p>\n
According to the FNJ, the Press Council Nepal has jurisdiction to look into the issues dissatisfied with the news. The FNJ has concluded that the treatment meted out to journalist Shrestha by using the government mechanism by ignoring the jurisdiction is against the freedom of press and expression, journalist code of conduct and the constitution. <\/p>\n
“Such an incident has struck at the democratic norms and values of a free press,” the FNJ said. The FNJ has strongly condemned the incident, regretting the government’s attitude. <\/p>\n
The FNJ has also demanded the government to correct the anti-press behaviour and immediately release journalist Shrestha without any conditions and respect the freedom of the press. The FNJ has also urged the bodies concerned to seek a solution through the Press Council Nepal by adopting the necessary process in case of disputes related to the news. <\/p>\n
The FNJ has also urged the Press Council Nepal to play an effective role in the matter of ownership of its jurisdiction. <\/p>\n
