Kathmandu. At least 51 people have been killed after a powerful earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, officials said. About 5,000 people have been displaced after the earthquake. <\/p>\n
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck at 5:58 a.m. local time on Saturday. The epicentre of the quake was about 68 km north-northwest of the town of Ende on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province. The earthquake was measured at a depth of 10 kilometers. <\/p>\n
According to officials, there were 341 aftershocks after the quake. It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in Indonesia in years. <\/p>\n
Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus Octavianus said in a televised address on Sunday that 36 people were seriously injured and 77 had minor injuries. <\/p>\n
More than 3,300 people have been displaced in Sikka Regency, one of the worst-hit areas, Indonesia’s disaster agency BNPB said. They were trapped there after the road was blocked. Some of the displaced people have been temporarily housed in sports stadiums. <\/p>\n
In the port city of Maumere, some residents have set up tarpaulins outside the collapsed houses. Some of the injured have been receiving treatment at a makeshift camp set up outside a local hospital. <\/p>\n
BNPB chief Lieutenant General Suharyanto said at least 157 houses were completely destroyed and nearly 200 houses were damaged. About 2,000 villagers have been shifted to temporary shelters in the Nazekeo Regency, closest to the epicenter. <\/p>\n
Officials say the terrain spread across the small islands has made rescue and relief operations challenging. Three helicopters and a rescue helicopter have been mobilised for the rescue operation. <\/p>\n
East Nusa Tenggara police chief Rudy Darmoko said buildings had collapsed and caused extensive damage in parts of the province. <\/p>\n
Rescue teams have not yet been able to reach all the affected areas of Nazekeo. Chief of the local search and rescue agency, Fathur Rahman, said that the landslide has disrupted the road and affected communication services. <\/p>\n
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Bijaya said more than 3,500 army and police personnel have been deployed across the country for rescue and relief efforts. <\/p>\n
The tsunami warning issued after the quake was later lifted. But authorities in parts of the northern island have warned more people to evacuate as the aftershocks could continue for several days. <\/p>\n
According to Al Jazeera, a powerful earthquake hit the coast in December 1992. More than 2,500 people were killed in Flores, according to Indonesia’s Geological Agency. <\/p>\n
