Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has claimed that more than 24,000 non-Americans voted illegally in the 2020 presidential election. He said the U.S. Census Bureau found the findings during a comparison between voter records and citizenship records. <\/p>\n
Trump wrote on Truth Social that the Census Bureau’s first 128 million voter records showed that more than 24,000 noncitizens voted illegally. The details of the remaining 32 million voters will also be examined and the number will increase further, he said. <\/p>\n
Trump has called on Congress to pass the Save America Act, reiterating his claim that he won the 2020 election. The Safeguarded American Voter Eligibility America Act, introduced in Congress on January 29, would require proof of US citizenship when registered on the voter rolls in federal elections. <\/p>\n
Under this, one has to produce documents such as passport or birth registration certificate and show a valid photo identity card during the voting. The proposed law would ban voting by mail except in certain circumstances, such as illness, physical disability, active military service or travel. It also proposes to direct states to remove non-citizen names from voter rolls using federal data. <\/p>\n
Citing the example of India’s electoral system, Trump also said that the voter ID system in the US should be tightened. He claimed that India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had earlier this month asked him how to vote in US elections without a valid photo ID. <\/p>\n
According to Trump, more than 646 million voters participated in the last general election and less than 1 percent of the votes were cast by mail. “Every voter is required to show a valid photo ID,” he said, adding that a similar system is needed in the United States. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the White House has also described the Save America Act as a law aimed at ensuring that only Americans can vote in federal elections. <\/p>\n
According to the White House, the proposed legislation would require proof of citizenship and a valid ID card for voter registration, limit postal voting and remove noncitizens from the voter rolls. The White House has said that in India and Brazil, voter identification is linked to biometric systems, and the US electoral system is relatively less rigorous. <\/p>\n
The Electoral Photo Identity Card System (EPIC) is being used to identify voters in India. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections were held in seven phases with a voter turnout of over 642 million voters, with an overall voter turnout of 65.79 per cent. <\/p>\n
