Kathmandu. The risk of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) disease transmitted through mosquito bites has increased in Nepal in recent times. The Family Welfare Division under the Department of Health Services has urged the people to remain alert as the number of people falling ill and losing their lives due to infection has increased. <\/p>\n
According to the Division, the infection has been confirmed in 80 people in 59 local levels of 25 districts of the country. It was found that 86 percent of the infected people were not vaccinated against JE. So far, 21 people have lost their lives due to the infection. <\/p>\n
Jhapa has the highest number of Japanese Encephalitis cases with 10. Similarly, seven cases each were detected in Kailali and Morang, six each in Saptari and Kanchanpur and five each in Chitwan, Sunsari and Nawalparasi (east). <\/p>\n
Although the risk of the disease is high in the districts of Tarai and inner Madhes, the infection has also been confirmed in hilly districts like Ilam, Kavrepalanchowk, Kathmandu, Sindhuli and Surkhet. <\/p>\n
According to the Department of Health Services, Japanese encephalitis is mainly transmitted through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito. The Family Welfare Division has urged the people to immediately take the patient to the nearest health institution if symptoms like high fever, headache, fainting, tremors or change in consciousness are seen without wasting time in home remedies. <\/p>\n
