Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Police have arrested two persons on the charge of cheating people of Rs 9 lakh on the pretext of releasing them on bail. The arrestees have been identified as Hari Bahadur Thapa Magar,45, and his wife Mithu Magar (37), also known as Anita Thapa Magar,45, of Mandikhatar in Budhanilkantha Municipality-Kathmandu.

They cheated three defendants who were arrested for their involvement in criminal activities during the protests on September 23 and 24 on the promise of releasing three defendants who are currently in custody at Jagannath Deval (Sundhara) Prison for their involvement in criminal activities.

Hari Bahadur Thapa Magar had assured that he was well acquainted with the justices of the Supreme Court and would be released on bail. He had demanded money from the victim’s side citing the bail amount and the lawyer’s argument costs.

As per the plan, he deposited Rs 9 lakh in the bank account of his wife Mithu Magar. Police arrested them from Mandikhatar after it was confirmed that they had not been able to work even after receiving the money.

Further investigation into the fraud case is underway, police said.
