Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States will win “completely” against Iran in the next two weeks. According to a CNN report, Trump has expressed high confidence that the new nuclear deal is very close. Trump’s optimistic remarks came after the weekend of tense military strikes between Iran and Israel stopped. Trump made the claim while addressing a virtual tele-rally organized for Senator Lindsey Graham’s campaign.
He said the behind-the-scenes diplomacy with Tehran was yielding “great results” and that Iran was ready to accept America’s “key strategic demands”. “We’re negotiating right now, and they want to make a very good deal,” Trump said. They agree to give us everything and not build nuclear weapons. ’
Linking the solution to the geopolitical impasse with domestic economic relief, Trump predicted a major change in global energy markets. “I think we’re going to win this battle. In the next two weeks, when we declare complete victory, you will feel the real victory. This will happen quickly and oil prices will fall drastically. ’
Trump’s announcement comes at a time when regional rivals Iran and Israel have stopped firing missiles against each other and stepped back from the state of war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the end of military strikes on Iranian targets, but did not say anything about a formal ceasefire as Trump had claimed. Iran has suspended military operations against Israel, but has threatened to resume air strikes in southern Lebanon. However, Iranian diplomatic channels have indicated that they are open to continuing direct talks with Washington.
A senior Iranian official told CNN that if the US takes an honest step, Tehran has no problem moving forward with peace talks. However, questions have also been raised about the timeline of Trump’s claim. Trump was asked on NBC’s Meet the Press program that if Iran is in such a weak state, why hasn’t it signed a formal deal yet? “Because they’re self-respecting,” Trump said. Now they have to do things they never thought they would do. They don’t have a choice, so it’s going to take some time. ’
This is not the first time Trump has set a two-week deadline for diplomatic progress in the region. Earlier, the ceasefire announced on April 7 was also announced by the administration which said it would take two weeks to finalize a permanent agreement.
