Kathmandu. KATHMANDU — The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has taken a significant lead in the counting of votes for the House of Representatives elections. According to the results so far, the Rastriya Samajwadi Party (RSP) has emerged as the largest party with 125 seats in the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system. Counting of votes has been completed in all 165 constituencies. The Nepali Congress has won 18 seats while the CPN-UML has won nine seats. Similarly, Nepal Communist Party (NCP) won in 8 seats.

Meanwhile, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RSP) has maintained its lead in the proportional representation (PR) vote count. According to the election results so far, the RSP has garnered 4,987,700 votes. The Nepali Congress has bagged 16,91,076 votes under the proportional representation category, while the CPN-UML has bagged 14,07,923 votes. Similarly, the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) has garnered 7,66,392 votes.

As per the provision, a political party should get at least 3 per cent of the total votes to get seats under the proportional representation system in the election to the House of Representatives.

According to the vote count so far, only the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Communist Party of Nepal and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) are in a position to cross this threshold. Rapper Balendra Shah, who is also the mayor of the former Kathmandu Metropolitan City, is also associated with the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The party seems to be on its way to making a strong presence in the parliament with a remarkable success in this election.

If this trend continues, it is estimated that the RSP will add around 60 seats under the proportional representation category. In this way, the total number of seats of the RSP can go up to 185, which is more than the two-thirds majority (184 seats) in the 275-member House of Representatives.

The wave of the RSP has left the old established parties far behind. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also congratulated Balen Shah and RSP for this success.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane and leader Balen Shah on Monday evening. He also pledged to take Nepal-India relations to a new height together with the new government.
