{{TAG_OPEN_strong_22} Kathmandu. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has exported electricity worth Rs 5.92 billion to India in the current fiscal year 2083/84. The income from electricity export has increased in September this year compared to the same period last year.
According to the NEA’s Electricity System Operations Department, 63,39,86,008 units of electricity were exported to India in September. The electricity was sold in the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar under bilateral agreements and through the Indian Energy Exchange Market.
In September last year, India had earned Rs 4.96 billion from electricity exports. Similarly, in August of the current fiscal year, electricity worth Rs 5.09 billion was exported. According to this, the export turnover has increased by Rs 96.20 crore in September this year compared to September last year.
In the first three months of the current fiscal year, Nepal has exported electricity worth Rs 16.15 billion.
According to NEA’s Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, the transaction of electricity exports increased in September even though the production of some hydropower projects that were approved for export was stopped due to the floods. About two-thirds of the electricity exported to India in September was sold through bilateral agreements and the rest through the energy exchange market.
40 MW electricity export resumes to Bangladesh
}
The export of 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh using India’s transmission system has resumed. The export was halted from August 26 after the floods in the Trishuli River caused damage to the Trishuli River due to the avalanche in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa.
According to NEA, the supply has resumed after the Central Electricity Authority of India granted permission to export power to Bangladesh.
As per the new provision, power generated from Solu, Kabeli and Lower Modi hydropower projects in place of Trishuli, Devighat and Chilime hydropower projects has been allowed to be exported to Bangladesh and Haryana states of India.
As per the five-year agreement signed between Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on October 1, 2081, 40 MW of electricity is exported to Bangladesh every day from June 15 to November 15, 2081.
Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority Shrestha said that the continuation of electricity exports from other hydropower projects despite the flood-affected projects and the resumption of export to Bangladesh is a significant achievement for electricity trade in Nepal.
Electricity export capacity reaches 1,179 MW
The Central Electricity Authority of India has granted permission to export an additional 31 MW of electricity. With the new permission, the total power capacity approved for export to India has reached about 1,179 MW.
Nepal, which has been exporting rainy power to India and Bangladesh after meeting the demand within the country, is expected to make the regional electricity trade more systematic with the latest expansion.
