Kathmandu. The office-bearers of the National Federation of Small and Urban Drinking Water Consumers’ held discussions with the officials representing Nijgadh, Bardibas, Kamalamai drinking water sector and other drinking water sector on contemporary issues related to the drinking water and sanitation sector and the institutional problems.
The major challenges facing the drinking water and sanitation organizations such as resource conservation, quality drinking water supply, financial sustainability, lack of technical expertise, consumer management, policy complexities and coordination with the local levels were discussed in detail during the discussions, said Khemraj Oli, chairperson of the drinking water and sanitation organizations.
In addition, there was a clear exchange of views on ways to strengthen small and community-based drinking water institutions, capacity building, good governance, transparency and accountability.
The FNJ office-bearers stressed on the need of making the role of drinking water and sanitation institutions more effective in the federal structure, strengthening voice at policy-making level and increasing collaboration with the province and local level.
Simara Khanepani Sanstha presented their experiences, practices and problems and made it clear that common initiative was necessary for long-term solution.
The discussion has made a significant contribution in identifying common problems in the drinking water and sanitation sector, strengthening mutual cooperation and coordination, and preparing a roadmap for institutional reforms.
