Kathmandu. At least 25 people have been killed in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the eastern state of Minas Djereis on Monday.
According to the BBC, the worst damage has been done in the city of Juiz de Fora, where 18 people have been confirmed dead. Similarly, 7 people have died in Uba city. Many people have disappeared due to the collapse of many houses during the night. Rescuers and local residents are clearing debris and mud to search for the missing, it said.
Brazil’s President Luiz Encio Lula da Silva expressed grief over the incident. He declared a state of emergency in the Juiz de Fora and said relief, rescue and reconstruction were being intensified. In Juiz de Fora alone, about 450 families have become homeless. The city’s mayor, Margarida Salomao, described the incident as the “saddest” moment of his five-year tenure, and declared three days of mourning.
Governor Romeu Zema said the incident was tragic and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims. According to officials, the Juiz de Fora recorded the heaviest rainfall in its history in February this year.
The National Meteorological Agency has issued heavy rain warnings for more than 12 states, including Minas Djeres and Rio de Janeiro. In 2024, floods and landslides in Rio Grande do Sul state killed nearly 200 people and affected more than two million people.
