Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has called for the creation of an international coalition to protect ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
He said he had called on seven countries, which rely heavily on oil imports via the Strait of Hormuz, to join a joint effort to secure ships. President Trump did not name those countries in his statement on Sunday. “The safety of the Strait of Hormuz should be ensured by the countries concerned, and the United States will support this,” he said in a post on TruthSocial.
“The countries of the world that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz should protect that route, and the United States will be a great contributor to that,” Trump wrote in the post. He also mentioned that the movement of ships would be facilitated by coordinating with the concerned countries.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is planning to form a coalition to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz with the consent of several countries. According to US officials, there are still discussions about whether to launch this campaign before or after a possible military action against Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important routes for global trade. It is estimated that about 20 percent of the world’s crude oil will be transported through this route. Rising tensions in the Middle East have raised international concerns about the safety of the route.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also spoke by phone with Trump on Sunday to discuss the situation in the Middle East. According to a statement from the British Prime Minister’s Office, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz will have an impact on global transport and trade.
Starmer said the reopening of the waterway was essential to ease global shipping and reduce rising costs. The two leaders agreed to remain in constant touch on the regional situation.
Earlier, Energy Secretary Ed Milmond said the UK was working with its allies to discuss options for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, ending the conflict is the most effective way to reopen the strait.
Australia has said it will not send naval ships to Hormuz to protect oil tankers. Australia’s Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King said in a statement on Monday that Australia would not send troops to the region.
