Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has welcomed the signing of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. He described the trilateral security cooperation as an important step towards regional security and self-reliance.
Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday that he was “very happy” that Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan had finally signed the agreement.
Referring to changes in the regional security architecture, Trump said the Middle East was gradually coming together and countries were able to defend themselves effectively. He called the agreement a “big, bold and important first step”.
Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the agreement in Mecca on August 7.
The agreement provides for the establishment of a structured mechanism for collective defense between the three countries and the expansion of military and security cooperation. According to the agreement, an armed attack on any one of the three countries will be considered as an attack on all three countries.
The agreement also incorporates provisions for enhancing military coordination, joint strategic exercise and cooperation on defense technology and military industrial capacity. The agreement comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and security concerns in the Middle East. Amid growing international interest in the agreement, the three countries have made it clear that the alliance is defensive in nature and does not intend to create any military or sectarian group.
The three countries have also pledged to support diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions between Iran and the United States. Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdogan has indicated that more countries can join the agreement. He said Egypt was also likely to join the structure.
According to him, the structure of the agreement could accommodate more members in the future.
