Kathmandu. 20 Nepali nationals stranded in Cambodia have been rescued and repatriated. They arrived in Cambodia at the behest of various people and were lured into illegal online fraud centers, casinos and other illegal jobs. Some Nepalis were found living without visa.

They were rescued at the initiative of the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok and with the support of the Cambodian government. With the facilitation of Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), they flew from Cambodia on March 18 and landed at Tribhuvan International Airport on March 18.

The embassy said efforts were underway to repatriate other Nepalis stranded or in difficult situation. It has been reported that Nepali nationals have been engaged in illegal activities, including online fraud, and are staying in Cambodia without visas or even after the expiry of their period. The Embassy in Bangkok or the Non-Resident Nepalis Association (NRNA), Cambodia has been urged to contact the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok or the NRNA Cambodia for facilitation in their return home.

The Embassy has also received complaints that some of the victims have been confiscated or lost by the passport company and in such cases, the embassy has been issuing free one-way travel permits to rescue them.

According to statistics, the number of Nepalis going to Cambodia has increased rapidly in recent years. In 2021, there were only 101 Nepalis, which increased to 9,676 in 2025.

The embassy has urged people not to take work permit before going abroad for employment and not to go to countries like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand being tempted to earn more quickly.
