Kathmandu. The US military has launched a new offensive in southern Iran amid the ongoing ceasefire.

According to the US military, the attack targeted Iranian missile sites and boats trying to place mines in the sea.

The US military’s Central Command said in a statement that the attacks were carried out in “self-defence”. Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for Central Command, said the US military was “exercising restraint and protecting our troops” amid the ceasefire.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei said talks with the United States had made “no immediate progress” but that an agreement to end the conflict “cannot happen immediately”.

According to Captain Hawkins of US Central Command, the attack took place near Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas. The city is the center of Iran’s naval base. It is located in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, Iranian state media said local authorities were investigating after an explosion was heard in Bandar Abbas.

Iran has not yet made a formal response to the US strike. It’s unclear how this will affect a potential U.S.-Iran peace deal.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a peace deal was still possible.

“We’re going to see if we can make progress,” Rubio told reporters. There is a lot of discussion about the language of the initial document, so it may take a few days. ’

He also said U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed his desire to close the deal. “He either makes a good deal or he doesn’t make a deal,” Rubio said.

Over the weekend, Trump hinted that both the US and Iran were close to a peace deal. But he later said he had instructed negotiators “not to rush”. Rubio also said an agreement could be reached by Monday.

But Bakaei said: “It is true that we have reached a conclusion on most of the contentious issues.” But no one can claim that the deal is immediate,” he said.

The memorandum of understanding includes a 60-day ceasefire, resumption of the Strait of Hormuz, and further talks over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
