Two arrested for character assassination on social media

Kathmandu. Two people have been arrested for character assassination on social media.

Police on Friday arrested 2 people on the charge of character assassination of a woman through social media.

The arrestees have been identified as Jarul Haq, 26, of Madanpur, Assam, Guwahati, India, and Saroj Karki, 24, of Champadevi Rural Municipality-6, Okhaldhunga, currently staying in Kathmandu. A police team deputed from the Cyber Bureau Bhotahiti, Kathmandu arrested them from different places of Kathmandu.

During the preliminary investigation, it has been revealed that Jarul had misused the obscene videos and photos of the victim and blackmailed her and repeatedly pressured her for undue gains.

It has also been revealed that Saroj was in a relationship with a friend in the course of her studies and after the breakup of the relationship, she repeatedly posted obscene materials through Facebook with the intention of character assassination, causing distress and mental stress to the victim.

The Kathmandu District Court has remanded them in custody for five days under the Electronic Transaction Act, 2063 BS.
