Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) has established a ‘Human Assistance Welfare Fund’ by utilizing a part of the membership fee collected from party members. Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa informed about the establishment of the Trust at a programme organised to mark the BP Koirala Memorial Day on Wednesday.

According to him, Rs 10 lakh has been deposited in the fund. He said that the amount will be spent on the families of squatters who are currently displaced, especially single women and children who are deprived of going to school.

“We have decided to establish the Human Assistance Welfare Fund from today with the amount deposited by the party friends in the form of membership fee,” Thapa said.

Volunteers from Nepal Women’s Association would be mobilized for the mobilization of the fund, he added. He said that the representatives of the women’s association will visit the affected settlements to identify the needs and be involved in distributing assistance. He also appealed to the Tarun Dal and other interested volunteers to join the campaign.

According to Thapa, the ‘Green Run’ programme was organized not only to raise public awareness about climate change but also to make a concrete beginning of social responsibility. He further said that the NC would take it forward through policy and programme to make climate change the main agenda of Nepal’s development.

Recalling that BP Koirala had propounded the concept of inclusive democracy and just access to natural resources during his time, he stressed the need to learn from these thoughts even today.

Admitting that there were some shortcomings in the management as the number of participants was more than the expectation, Thapa apologized to the youths who participated in the program. He pledged to make the upcoming programmes more systematic.

Meanwhile, Thapa said the NC would launch a new nationwide campaign from Thursday and the details would be made public tomorrow.
