US President Donald Trump bans birth tourism from citizenship

Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump has once again tried to curtail the right to birthright citizenship in America. Trump’s move comes weeks after the Supreme Court rejected a similar attempt.

On Thursday, Trump signed two executive orders. The first of which further expands the definition of non-citizens who are ineligible for citizenship. The second order prohibits a practice known as “birth tourism,” in which pregnant women come to the U.S. solely for the purpose of making their babies U.S. citizens.

“This should have been done many years ago, but we’re managing it now,” Trump said. He also criticized the Supreme Court for blocking his previous attempt to end the 150-year-old policy.

Key points of command:

1. Automatically barred citizenship: If a child’s parents are both non-citizens and one of them is a member of a foreign terrorist group, a foreign government employee, or a fraudulent person seeking citizenship, their children will not automatically be granted citizenship on the basis of their birth in the United States.

2. Ban on Birth Tourism: Foreigners taking advantage of American generosity to come to the U.S. just to have children are completely prohibited.

The Trump administration has accused citizens of countries like Russia and China of infiltrating the United States through “birth tourism.” While Trump claims that millions of babies are born through this process, data from the Migration Policy Institute shows that only about 22,000 to 26,000 babies are born this way each year.

“People come here under the guise of tourists, but their real purpose is to have a child and automatically become a U.S. citizen,” said Stephen Miller, Trump’s homeland security adviser. Those children later exercise U.S. welfare benefits and the right to vote, which is a right only for real Americans. ”
