Kathmandu. Chairman of Ujyalo Nepal Party, Kulman Ghising, has said that the profit of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is shrinking and it needs serious review and reform.

He said this while extending his best wishes on the occasion of the completion of 41 years of NRA through social media Facebook on Monday.

“The NEA’s profit is shrinking today (from Rs 12 billion in FY 2081/82 to only Rs 5 billion in FY 2082/83). But the alternative is not to weaken the NRA, but to make it more capable, strong, professional, transparent and accountable to the people. ’

He expressed his confidence that NEA’s role would become more effective in ensuring reliable service of electricity, expansion of electricity export and national resolution of prosperous Nepal.

He recalled that NEA, which was once known as an organization responsible for load-shedding, changed its identity after the fiscal year 2072/73 BS.

He wrote, “From the end of load-shedding to almost hundred percent electrification, from being a net importer to exporter of electricity to making a significant contribution to the national economy by making a profit at a loss, is an inspiring story of transformation in itself.” The year 2072/73 was a turning point in Nepal’s energy history.

Before that was a story of darkness, scarcity and loss, then a new chapter of light, confidence and possibility began. The visit also conveys an important message that public institutions are not just a burden to the nation, but can be strong drivers of national prosperity if there is competent leadership, honest management and clear objectives. ’
