Kathmandu. At least 28 people have been killed and 39 others injured in an attack by the Rapid Support Force (RSF), a paramilitary force in Sudan. The group has been growing political and military power in Sudan in recent years.
On April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF clashed in the midst of a transitional government and a power struggle since 2019. This has led to civil war across the country. The Sudan Doctors Network, which has been monitoring the three-year civil war, said the attack damaged the region’s only health centre. Health workers were also the target of the attack, while the condition of one health worker is not yet known.
The Doctors’ Network called the attack a “complete criminal act” in violation of international humanitarian law. The attack came amid rising ethnic tensions in the western Darfur region. A recent UN investigation concluded that RSF has committed genocide against non-Arab communities.
RSF fighters have set fire to many houses in the city, displacing residents to nearby villages, according to independent group Emergency Lawyers.
