Kathmandu. Eight major hydropower projects in Rasuwa district have been badly affected due to floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins.

The flood has completely halted the production of electricity in five projects and severely damaged the physical structures of three big projects that are under construction. With this, 578.42 MW of hydropower projects in Rasuwa district have been hit by floods.

The subsidiary companies of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and the projects promoted by the private sector have been directly affected by the floods. The floods have completely halted the production of 111 MW Rasuwagadhi hydropower project and 22 MW Chilime hydropower project under NEA’s subsidiary company.

Similarly, power supply to the private hydropower projects of 78 MW Sanjen Khola (Salasungi), 20 MW Langtang Khola and 5 MW Mailung Khola hydropower projects has been affected due to which the power supply to the national grid has been disrupted. A total of 236 MW of electricity from these five projects has been completely cut off now.

On the other hand, floods and landslides have dealt a severe blow to the under-construction national pride and big FDI projects. The floods have damaged the physical structures of the 216-megawatt Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project, which is being constructed with Korean investment.

Likewise, major structures and access road of 120 MW Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project have been damaged and the under-construction 6.42 MW Upper Mailung-A Project has also been affected by floods. Preliminary details show that three under-construction projects with a capacity of 342.42 MW have suffered direct damages.

The technical team is finding it difficult to carry out on-site inspection as the flood has damaged the access road and bridges leading to the project site. Exact details of physical and economic damage to the projects would be received only after the flood level receded, and the reconstruction and repair works would be forwarded.
