Tomato farmers protest: Demand for subsidy and market management (Photos)

. Vegetable farmers on Wednesday staged a protest against the government by throwing tomatoes on the road at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu. They have resorted to protest against the government’s failure to provide adequate subsidies to the farmers, fair price of their produce and guarantee of market and import-oriented policies that have hit the domestic farmers.

During the demonstration, the farmers accused the government of not being able to sell their tomatoes and finding it difficult to recover the cost and that the government was negligent in addressing the problems of the farmers.TAG_OPEN_div_23 In protest, they threw tomatoes on the road and expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s agricultural policy.

The farmers have demanded the government to immediately implement the policy of fixing minimum support price (MSP) of agricultural products, increasing subsidy on production, easy availability of fertilizers and seeds, market management and prioritizing domestic production.TAG_OPEN_div_21 They also said that Nepali farmers have not been able to compete due to cheap imported vegetables.
