Kathmandu. Iran will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to escalating tensions with the United States. Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmed Dunyamali has accused the United States of killing the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and said it would not be possible to participate in the World Cup. “We can’t participate in the World Cup if the United States assassinates our leader,” he told state television. ”

Since February 28, the conflict between the United States and Israel has escalated on one side and Iran on the other. The conflict has not only affected the West Asian region but also global energy supply chains. Minister Dunyamali said that the security of the citizens and players of the country is not guaranteed in the current situation and there is no environment necessary for the participation in the World Cup. He also claimed that thousands of Iranians have been killed in the war in the last few months.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament will begin on June 11 and conclude on July 19 with the final. All of Iran’s group stage matches are scheduled to be played in the US cities of Los Angeles and Seattle. However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said that US President Donald Trump will welcome the Iranian team to the tournament.

But Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iran Football Federation, said that in the current circumstances, Iran cannot look forward to the World Cup.
