Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art food laboratory in a bid to make food safety effective.

KMC acting Mayor Sunita Dangol inaugurated the lab on Wednesday.

KMC has stated that the laboratory will help ensure access to safe, hygienic and quality food items by making food inspection more effective.

According to KMC, the laboratory would help protect consumers’ welfare, reduce foodborne diseases and maintain quality in food business.

Talking to media persons after the inauguration, acting chief Dangol said that problems have surfaced in course of food monitoring for lack of its own laboratory for testing samples.

“Sometimes you have to pay fines,” she said. In that case, we need lab tests. But the test took a long time and did not have its own structure, so it had to depend on others. ’

She said that some tests could be carried out at the local level after the operation of the metropolis’ laboratory and the monitoring would be easier and more effective.

“This is the beginning and we will continue to expand it. The most important thing to do when it comes to monitoring is to test the samples. Now that we have our own lab, we believe that it will play an important role in making the monitoring work easier and faster to a great extent,” she said.
